Alpena volleyball falls in Alma tourney semis
ALMA-The Alpena volleyball team started the 2014 season at the 16 team Alma Invitational on Saturday. Alpena earn first place in its pool after beating Pinconning 25-15 and 27-25, Breckenridge 25-17 and 25-17, and Alma 25-15 and 26-24.
Alpena entered the Gold Division with a match against Lainsburg. Alpena lost the first set 13-25, but rallied back to take the next two sets, 25-17 and 15-11. The semifinal match paired Alpena with last year’s Alma Invitational champion and 2013 Class B semifinalists, Lake Odessa Lakewood. In the first set of the semifinals, Alexis Smith set-up Brianna Clark for three kills against Lakewood to battle for a score of 26-28. Alpena fell in the final set 12-25.
Katie Mack led the attacking for the Wildcats with 22 kills, Jordan Modrzynski had 16 kills,
Clark had 14 kills and Lindsey Moggie added 13 kills. Smith set up the attackers with 53 assists. Jordan Modrzynski served 12 aces and Lindsey Moggie and Isabelle O’Neil each had 5 aces. Moggie led the Wildcats with 26 defensive digs, while Allison Heise had 19 defensive digs and O’Neil had 18 defensive digs.
