BERNADETTE MADELINE HIGGASON
Mrs. Bernadette Madeline Higgason (nee Brousseau), age 96, passed away on Aug. 10, 2014, at the Center Ridge Health Campus in North Ridgeville following a long illness and wonderful life.
She was born to Henry and Mary Brousseau (Nee Rouleau) in Detroit, Mich., on May 25, 1918. The family moved to Alpena, Mich., shortly after her birth, where Mrs. Higgason grew up and graduated from Saint Anne High School. Moving back to Detroit after school, she met and married Herbert Higgason in 1941. They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1991 in Alpena, shortly before Herbert’s death. She lived in Detroit until 1981, and then spent 20 years alternating between Alpena and Nalcrest, Fla. In 2001 she moved to North Ridgeville, Ohio, to be near her only child, Thomas, and remained there until her death.
During WWII the electric mixer company (Electromaster) she worked for in Detroit transitioned to bomb making in support of the war effort, and her husband helped load those bombs onto Navy planes on the USS Lexington CV-16, as a Chief Ordnanceman. Mrs. Higgason enjoyed travel, bowling, gardening and TOPS meetings when she was younger and crafts, Word Search puzzles and watching mass on EWTN as she aged.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine siblings. She is survived by her son, Lieutenant Commander Thomas H. Higgason, Supply Corps, United States Navy (Retired) of North Ridgeville, (Luz nee Alvarez-Lopez- whom he met and married in Ecuador with Mrs. Higgason attending the wedding), two granddaughters, Mary Anne (Vincent) Gaikens and Carmen Isabella (Franco) Gallo, and three great-grandsons: Franco, Dominic and Vincenzo Gallo, whom she doted on, as well as a sister, Josephine Knoll, and brother, Donald Brousseau and Sister-in-Law Leanore Brousseau.
In accordance with her wishes, there was no ceremony, and she was cremated as was her husband, and will be her son.
