Elizabeth “Betty” Marie Behnke, 98, of Alpena, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Alpena Regional Medical Center.

Betty Wallace was born May 6, 1916, in Wilson Township to Samuel and Carrie (Dent) Wallace and had been a life-long resident of the Alpena area. She married Oscar Behnke on Aug. 30, 1936. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1985. Betty attended First United Methodist Church and founded the Joy Fellowship Group, serving as the President for a number of years. She was a member of the Alpena Garden Club, the Red Hat Society, Civic League and a Past Worthy Matron of the Alpena Order of Eastern Stars. A talented and accomplished seamstress, Betty had worked for the Alpena Garment Company/Frazer’s and also volunteered at Tendercare as their seamstress. She also enjoyed quilting and made many quilts for family and friends.

Surviving are her son, Lynn Behnke of Rochester, Minn.; two granddaughters, Deborah (Don) Paquet, Alison (Jed Anderson) Behnke; three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Peter and Ellen Paquet; three sisters, Cerelda Schiele, of Florida, Doris Chrzanowski of Westland, Mich., and Deloris Ceglarek of Alpena. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Carla, a sister, Velva, and five brothers; Edward, Forrest, James, Robert, and Lynn.

Elizabeth Behnke is at McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena where friends may call on Friday from 2-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gene Bacon officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Comfort Care Center at ARMC or the charity of your choice.
