John D. Wager, age 71 of Alpena died Saturday Aug. 2, 2014 at his home.

John was born in Detroit on May 27, 1943 to Douglas and Lillian (Eller) Wager. He attended Henry Ford High School and graduated in 1961. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp., and served four years during the Vietnam conflict.

After returning home, he attended training at the police academy, and then was employed with the City of Detroit Police Department in the motorcycle division. He worked for the city for 27 years, retiring in 1996 and moving to Alpena that same year.

John was very active with the Alpena Sportsman Club, and enjoyed target practice to keep up his skills, in which he won numerous awards for marksmanship. His great love was simply spending time outdoors, hunting, and plowing snow.

He is survived by his two daughters Jodi Ray of Calif., and Tracy Wager of Alpena, formerly of Las Vegas. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Nicole Armitage, Scott McCorkle and Braiden Wager; and a brother, Lenny Wager.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents, and a granddaughter, Amanda Wager.
