Alpena 12U wins two in Kentucky
LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY- The Alpena 12U team bounced back in a big way on Friday when it beat Connersville, Indiana 4-2 and Homewood, Illinois 8-2. It’s victories helped catapult it to the number two seed in today’s bracket play.
Chris DeRocher pitched five innings in the first game, with Aidan Goike coming in for the one inning save. DeRocher was one hit away from throwing a no-hitter. He also walked five and struck out four. Goike walked two struck out two in his inning.
Owen Limback was voted “Game Star” by the tournament committee for scattering two hits in a five hit game. Jared Sharpe, DeRocher and Kyle VanDussen all picked up hits.
Alpena came out strong against Homewood, picking up five runs in the first inning. DeRocher was voted “Game Star” with three hits. VanDussen and Colby Plowman picked up two hits each while Goike, Anthony Berg, Eli Winter and Adam Urlaub all had hits.
Alpena also received a lot of help from pitcher Jared Sharpe, who threw a full game. Sharpe gave up five hits, two runs and struck out five.
“Jared throwing that full game was crucial. We didn’t have to dip into our other pitchers and can save them for later games,” Limback said.
Alpena plays tonight at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Prairieview, Kentucky and Connersville game.
No 11U or 16U scores were reported at press time.
