Cherie J. Smigelski, age 80, passed away July 25, 2014, at Alpena Regional Medical Center.

Cherie was born on Jan. 30, 1934, to the late Clarence (Clare) and Madeline (Babe) Skiba in Alpena. She married Richard (Dick) Smigelski on May 20, 1961, at St. Anne Catholic Church of Alpena. Dick preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1992. Prior to her marriage to Dick she served as a Dominican Nun. Cherie enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Grand Lake and hunting camp at Black River as well as water color Painting, Gardening and spending time with her Grandchildren. She was employed as a teacher with the religious dept at All Saints School for many years. She and Dick owned and operated Dick’s Toys for 51 years.

She is survived by her five children, Richard A. (Tina) Smigelski of Harrisville, JoAnne Smigelski and fiance Jere Dehring of East Lansing, Marion (Chris) Belanger, Kathryn (Jay) Weed and Andrew Smigelski all of Alpena. Eight grandchildren, Rachel Belanger, Matthew Belanger, Brandon Smigelski, Tyrell Woodward, Sarah Belanger, Justin Smigelski, Elizabeth Belanger and Jaylynn Weed. Two brothers Mark (Ann) Skiba of Alpena, Clare John CJ (Diedre) Skiba of Algonquin, Ill., two sisters Chlairelynn of Linwood and Marylou (Robert) Tempesti of Virginia Beach, Va. One sister-in-law Betty Skiba of Jenison, Mich. And numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Cherie was preceded in death by one granddaughter Ashley Smigelski and one brother Michael Skiba.

Family and friends will gather at the Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home on Monday, July 28, 2014, from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a Rosary Society Service at 3 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church from 10 a.m. till the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Okoli officiating.

Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery Alpena, Mich.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or All Saints School.
