Project Connect set for Alcona County
ALCONA – Alcona County’s 8th annual free “Day of Hospitality,” in conjunction with Project Connect, will take place Aug. 5 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Alcona High School’s gymnasium.
Julie and Les Miller volunteered to chair the event in order to keep Project Connect thriving after a brief concern of collapse when Lea Krause and Alcona Health Center needed to withdraw from leadership. The Millers are further supported by the new co-sponsors New Life Lutheran Church, Spruce Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church of Barton City.
After last year’s rewarding experience the Millers decided to commit to chairing the event.
“We knew the need was great but we had no idea until we were there as to how great,” Julie Miller said.
Together, the co-sponsors have gathered over 35 agencies and individuals to give assistance to anyone in need. Services include veteran’s assistance, eye care, job support, information on education, hair cuts and fun for children of all ages. Some agencies and businesses that will be in attendance include Head Start, Catholic Human Services, Alcona Health Center, Tiger Clinic, NEMI Behavioral Institute, Hospice Angelic Care, Dr. Ben Dietrich of Harrisville Eye Care and MIWorks.
“Businesses have been so supportive,” said Julie Miller who, along with the committee, placed over 105 personal calls to local businesses.
Aside from services being provided, necessary home goods also will be available. Friends of Hope will be providing groceries and school supplies while the sponsoring churches are providing household products, hygiene products and cleaning supplies. Community donations have further provided money for new socks, underwear and diapers.
Community donations are funding a lunch to all of those who attend. The Salvation Army of Alpena will be serving the lunch and providing the coffee and lemonade.
“We anticipate serving lunch for 400; hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks,” Miller said.
Door prizes will include grocery gift cards, gas gift certificates, a free fishing day at a local trout farm, tickets to Thunder Bay Theatre, a BBQ grill and a Makita drill kit. Miller also said that while Alcona County residents are the target audience, the day’s events are not limited to Alcona County and identification is not required.
