Panthers, Vulcans, ThunderCats win PIGS titles

The Presque Isle Panthers took home the 18U trophy at the fifth annual Presque Isle Girls Softball Tournament last weekend in Rogers City.

The bracket play portion of the tournament began Saturday night with the 18U division at 10:15 p.m. The Petoskey Predators squared off with the Great Lakes Heat under the lights at Sports Park, and the Heat came away with a victory.

This set up a final between the Heat and the host Panthers. The Panthers advanced to the finals by winning the 18U pool portion of the tourney with a 3-1 record. In the title game, the Panthers came away with a mercy rule victory over the Heat, 10-2 in five innings. Pitching another gem for the Panthers was Ashley Meyers as she gave up only two earned runs on just five hits while walking two and striking out two. The Panthers were led offensively by Anna Couture, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI; Kayla Lenard was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice and two runs scored; Allisa Jones was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Logan Fleming was 2-for-4 with two runs scored plus an RBI. Other RBIs came from Meyers and Amy Buczkowski.

Taking the loss for the Heat was Jensen Tchorzynski as she gave up six earned runs on 12 Panther hits while striking out two. Courtney Streich was the only Heat player with more than one hit as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The 16U bracket play started Sunday morning with the 4-seed Alpena Thindercats losing to the 5th seeded Boyne Bandits. Also playing at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, the 3rd seeded Toxic Fastpitch beat the 6th seed Clio Mustangs. This set up two semifinal games between: No. 1 Moran Vulcans and the Boyne Bandits; and No. 2 Great Lakes Heat 16u and the Toxic. In the first semifinal, the Vulcans mercied the Bandits and in the other semifinal the Toxic mercied the Heat.

So the Final game for the 16U was set between the Vulcans and Toxic Fastpitch. The Vulcans wasted little time in dispatching the Toxic and were awarded the championship trophy for the second year in a row.

The 14U brackets went as follows: the 6th seed Panthers 12 team was beaten by the 3rd seed Thundercats White 8-3; the 4th seed Petoskey Blaze beat the 5th seed Panthers 14 team 10-5. The semifinals were between No. 1 Line Drive Gold and the Blaze; and No. 2 Thundercats Green vs Thundercats White. The Gold beat the Blaze and the Green beat White setting up a very exciting 14U final.

In that game Alpena scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Line Drive scored twice in the second inning to take a brief 2-1 lead. The Thundercats answered with a run in the top of the third and it stayed tied until the seventh inning when Alpena scored an additional run.
