Lions Club learns about child mentor program
Kacey Beattie, mentoring director of the Alpena Boys and Girls Club, was the speaker at last week’s Alpena Lions Club meeting. She oriented the Lions about the mentoring programs she directs, placing special emphasis on the summer programs of the club.
This summer there are lots of kids at the club more than 100. The kids are busy looking for mentors. They are busy forming friendships, learning new things and sometimes even making trips outside the club.
The club’s mentors are busy instilling values, getting kids to smile and working with children with special problems.
The mentors seek to be positive role models for the kids. They do a lot of teaching to say “please” and “thank you.” One lesson sometimes used is, said Beattie, if you screwed up, you can turn yourself around, and improve yourself.
Program chair for the meeting was Vice President Tom Woizeschke.
Before the program, President Steve Murch began the auctioning off of items contributed to the Lions during the recent Lions White Cane Sale. Winning bidders were Tammy Lewis, PDG Beverly Bodem, Pat Hentkowski, and Sharron Lessard. The auction will continue at the next Lions meeting.
