Aliferis Memorial Race recognized by Governor’s Council on fitness

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has recognized the Aliferis Memorial Race as a quality physical activity event. As a result, Alpena Regional Medical Center’s Aliferis Memorial Race will be included in the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program.

The 13th Annual Aliferis Memorial Race, hosted by the ARMC Development Council’s Business Relations Committee, takes place August 30. The race, open to runners, walkers and bikers of all ages and ability level, includes a Duathlon (Bike/Run), 5K Run, 1-mile Walk, 18.5-mile Bike Race, and the ever popular Tot Trot for those 9 and under. The Aliferis Memorial Race benefits the Alpena Cancer Center, the Dr. Peter Aliferis Memorial Scholarship and the Emergency Department project at ARMC.

The race has been named in memory of longtime Alpena General Hospital Pathologist, Dr. Peter Aliferis.

Participants can register online at, click on Events Page. Early registration rates are in place until August 16. Race forms are also available in the Development Department.

The Pure Michigan FITness Series endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents.

“By endorsing local events all across the state, we hope to bring attention to the importance of physical activity and encourage our citizens to take responsibility for their health,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “These local events can have a tremendous impact on health care costs that present a significant challenge for our state’s economy.”

“We are proud to receive this endorsement again this year. This is the eleventh consecutive year the Aliferis Race has been endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports,” said Ann Diamond, ARMC Development Director. “Last year we had 260 participants and as the awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle increase, this event grows every year. We encourage everyone to join us on August 30 for a great family event.”

In order to become an endorsed event, an organization must complete an application form for review. Some criteria that is taken into consideration includes providing a positive, safe physical activity experience using qualified officials and benefiting a nonprofit or charitable organization.
