Alpena 14U team tops Clinton Valley crown
The Alpena 14U baseball team started strong on Friday and never let up on Saturday when it beat Clinton Valley 18-3 and 18-0 to take the 2014 Cal Ripken state championship.
“It feels good, we wish we could have competed against a few more teams, but it’s a great feeling to be the state champions,” Alpena 14U coach Harry Guthrie said.
Alpena had previously beaten Clinton Valley 33-2 in Game 1 of the best-of-5 series on Friday.
Logan Guthrie started as a pitcher for Alpena in the second game. He faced six batters in two innings and struck out four. Lucas Crosby and Bruz Copping finished the game.
Alpena’s hurlers ended the day with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
Alpena had 10 hits and was led at the plate by Guthrie with two singles and a double. A.J. Nowak, Cody Sumerix, Copping and Josh Lucas all hit doubles en route to Alpena’s rout.
Crosby started in the third game. He faced nine batters and retired five. Rhett McDonald and Nowak ended the game, garnering 11 strikeouts and three walks.
Alpena was led by six different batters, each of whom had two singles: Copping, Guthrie, Lucas, Nowak, Noah Kent and Clay Donajkowski.
Although Alpena faced only one team in its tournament, it’s more than ready to face the tough competition in the regional games.
“This was a big win for us. We’re really excited to move on to Kentucky for the regional tournament and are looking forward to making a good run there,” Guthrie said.
Alpena will be in Kentucky on July 23 and will play Thursday through Sunday.
