AHSBR hosting 10U, 12U and 14U Cal Ripken state tournaments
Last year, the teams from Alpena Huron Shore Babe Ruth were the talk of the state tournament as the 9U and 11U teams won state titles in Niles while the 10U and 12U teams finished runner-up.
Alpena’s teams are hoping to bring home some more hardware this season and this time, they’ll get to play on their own field.
AHSBR will play host to the 2014 10U, 12U and 14U Cal Ripken state tournaments, which begin today and run through Sunday. The 10U and 12U games will be played at the Little League Complex on US 23 North and the 14U tournament will be played at Alpena High School.
In the 10U tournament, Alpena is one of six teams completing for the title. The other teams involved are Central UP, Huron Valley Maroon, Huron Valley White, L’Anse Creuse and Clinton Valley. The tournament is broken into two pools of 3 teams and Alpena is in a pool with Central UP and Huron Valley Maroon. Alpena opens play today at 4 p.m. against Central UP at Sabourin Field.
In the 12U bracket, three teams will be competing for the title including an Alpena Green team and an Alpena Grey team. The only other team competing is Clinton Valley, but an Alpena 11U team has been added to the tournament to add in some exhibition games. Alpena Grey will play Alpena 11U today at 4 p.m. at Rohn Field and Clinton Valley will play Alpena Green at 6:15 p.m. on the same field.

Games 2 and 3 will be played at noon and 3 p.m. respectively on Saturday and if necessary, Games 4 and 5 will be played at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
