Jay F. Wagner, 89, of Alpena died Monday, July 7, 2014 at home.

Jay was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Lachine, Mich., to Ralph and Ida (Sommerfield) Wagner and had been a life-long resident of the Alpena area. He married Betty Elkins in 1945, she preceded him in death in 1976. In 1981 he married Elaine Klein. Jay served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from HPC where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. Jay was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena, a life member of VFW Post #2496 where he was a Past Commander, and the D.A.V. He was an excellent woodcrafter, enjoying mounting antlers, loved hunting, playing accordion and the companionship of his dogs. He was a great fix-it man and received great pleasure from “feeding” people.

Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Elaine, three children; Lillian (Roger) Bartlett of Ossineke, John (Debbie) Wagner of Roy, Utah, Helen Allen of Grand Rapids, Mich., eight grand-children, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elaine Pumphrey, a great-grandson, Trenton, a great-granddaughter, Cecilia, a sister, Jeanette Scheen (his twin), four brothers, William, Gerald, Arthur, Larry and a son-in-law, Bobbie Allen.

Jay Wagner is at McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena where family and friends will gather on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. with military honors by VFW Post #2496 at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Friday, July 11, 2014, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev.
