EDNA MAE FRONGILLO

Edna Mae “Mickie” Frongillo, 91, of Alpena, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at home.

Edna was born in Buffalo, N.Y. in June, 1923, and married George Frongillo at All Saints Catholic Church. They had two sons, Thomas David and George Patrick.

Mickie dedicated her life doing good for others and will be sadly missed, moving from Detroit where she was very active to Alpena. She volunteered at Alpena Regional Medical Center for 33 years where she had been the manager and buyer of the gift shop. When the new director came in charge more buyers were chosen, but Mickie was the buyer and in charge of the gift department. She was the founder of the Knitters Group for the O.B. department, and personally knit hundreds of bonnets and booties, and at Christmas, hats and booties-she still knits and does hats for chemo patients at the Cancer Center.

Mickie was the Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year in 1987, and Zonta Club “Woman of the Year” in 1994. She was part of the A.G.H. Development Fund group, member of V.F.W. 2496 and Chaplain for many years, also of District, receiving many honors from State V.F.W. She was a life member of National Home for V.F.W., life member military Order of Cooties, member of St. Anne Catholic Church and the Sodality, and St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital. Mickie was a member of the Founder’s Society, active at Pied Piper with the Valentine’s Day party and also at Christmas with Santa and gifts.

One of her main interests was raising money for equipment for the Cardiac Rehab Department. This was Dr. Carillo’s project and she worked side by side to get equipment needed in memory of her husband, George, son, Thomas David, and grandson, Justin. She has personally donated three expensive pieces to the Cardiac Rehab Dept. that are still in use. In 2011, the Mickie Frongillo Nursing Scholarship Fund was started for young men and women, this will be done each year.

Surviving are a son, George Patrick and wife Gale; granddaughter, Sasha (Virgilio) SanAndres; and two great-grandchildren, Vilo and Angelina.

Per her request cremation will take place. No services will be held. Arrangements are being handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
