Let’s make visitors feel welcome

This week the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is playing host to the 13th annual Marine Advanced Technology Education International Competition with teams coming from all around the world to take part in the remotely operated vehicle competition. This is another opportunity for Alpena, and the entire region, to shine on a big stage.

More than 60 teams from the United States, Canada, Scotland, Japan and other countries will be taking part. The competition will bring approximately 1,000 people to Alpena, including competitors, coaches, chaperones, judges and others.

These people will be visiting our motels, restaurants and other businesses. They will pump tens of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

While they are coming to take part in an ROV competition, they also are coming for an experience and to see a place most of them have never visited before.

In order to show our visitors what we already know, that Alpena is a terrific place, we need everyone to help make these visitors feel welcome and show them Northeast Michigan spirit and hospitality. Treat them well and show them your appreciation for coming to Alpena.

The best advertisement to make people want to visit a community is word of mouth. If several people like a place, chances are others will as well. If we give them a great experience they will sing the praises of our community. That’s PR money can’t buy.

So let’s all do our part and make their visit one they talk about for years to come.
