Circle of Parents sets topics through July

Topics ranging from bedtime to tantrums to media are slated for the weekly Circle of Parents on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon at First Congregational United Church of Christ of Alpena.

The group is free and open to anyone raising children, according to facilitator Ruth Fleck of Partners In Prevention. The upcoming schedule includes:

June 26 Bed Time Rituals, based on the work of popular parenting author Dr. Becky Bailey.

July 3 no meeting this date in advance of the Independence Day holiday.

July 10 Discipline vs. Punishment will cover how these approaches to managing children’s behavior are different.

July 17 Keeping Our Composure When Kids have Tantrums will offer practical ideas for staying in charge.

July 24 Effective Use of “Time Out” and “Safe Place” will be discussed.

July 31 Media Sharp will present information on the effects of media on children and what parents can do to minimize harm.

No registration is required, but Fleck said a phone call is appreciated so materials can be prepared. Contact her at 356-2880 or 1-800-354-2880.

“Looking ahead to fall, we’d like to know if parents would find an evening group easier to attend,” Fleck said. “I ask people to call to let us know whether 6:30 p.m. Monday or Friday evenings may be preferable to the 11 a.m. Thursday meeting.”

Circle of Parents, a national model mutual support group, is supported locally by funding from the Comstock Fund of United Church of Christ of Alpena and United Way of Northeast Michigan.
