Habitat to host annual garage sale

ALCONA – Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan is having its annual garage sale and silent auction June 27-28, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Alcona Recreation Area. The sale is a major fundraiser for the organization, and is dependent on the community for its success.

“Everything we sell is donated,” coordinator Jeanne Meskus said. “Everything is washed and cleaned and organized by categories.”

There are no clothes, computers or old televisions at the sale, but there are plenty of pans, dishes, decorations, furniture and many other items.

“We also have a silent auction, where items are donated from businesses and some of the nicer items donated for the sale are set aside for bids,” Meskus said. “There is also a special area where some of the higher worth items are priced separately.”

Anyone who would like to donate for the sale can drop off items June 21, 23-25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Alcona Recreation Area. Items are asked to be gently used, clean garage sale or furniture items.

“If you want to donate, just bring it to the ARA site on those days,” Meskus said. “All the funds raised go to local area Habitat for Humanity, and will help to build a house or help support our Brush with Kindness program.”

All the items in the two pole barns used for the sale are not priced, except for the special area, and volunteers count on donations for the items to help fund the Habitat projects in the area. For more information on the sale, or to ask about donating items, call Jeanne Meskus at 810-488-1652, or email her at jmari1941@gmail.com and put “Habitat for Humanity” in the subject line.
