Zonta clubs conduct joint installation

Zonta Club of Alpena/Tri-County and Zonta Club of Alpena recently held a joint installation of new officers and an initiation of new members at The Sanctuary Inn.

Peggy Donakowski served as mistress of ceremonies and Anna Sylvester, Area 1 director of District 15, presided over the installation of officers and induction of new members.

Guest speakers were Julie Kao, a Spanish teacher at Thunder Bay Junior High School, and Jackie Bobcean of the Handbags of Hope Program. The HBOH program takes new or gently used purses, fills them with toiletries and then delivers them to domestic abuse or teen programs as well as those in transitional housing throughout Michigan.

HBOH believes a woman’s handbag is a very personal possession and that women carry a small world in their handbag. When they are forced to run for safety in the middle of the night, often taking only the clothes on their back and a child in their arm, there isn’t time to collect the other small necessities they might need.

Donations and personal items were collected by the Zontians for the HBOH program, which lists 10 essential items needed for each purse given out. Those items include hair brushes, nail clippers, tissues, memo pads, chap stick, travel size deodorant, body wash, hand lotion, wallets and cosmetic bags. Also requested are hand sanitizers and cosmetics.Anyone who would like to give to this Zonta project may contact Donakowski at 356-4449.

Zonta is a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.
