Optimist Club awards scholarships
The Optimist Club of Alpena awarded annual scholarships to two Alpena High School seniors. Logan Myers, daughter of David and Jennifer Myers of Alpena, and Alanna Grulke, daughter of Kevin and Sandra Grulke of Alpena, each received a $500 scholarship toward their college education.
Myers plans to attend Cornerstone University and pursue a career in exercise science. She was on the Honor Roll at Alpena High School through 10th, 11th, and 12th grades and a member of the National Honor Society for 11th and 12th grades.
Myers was also a member of Key Club where she learned the importance and rewards of volunteering in her community. Along with helping out at St. Bernard’s Friendship Room and volunteering at the Compassion Pregnancy Center, she helped with the elementary volleyball program and walked in the Relay for Life.
Grulke graduated from AHS with a 4.02 grade point average. She was on the Honor Roll all though high school and received Academic Excellence Awards.
Grulke’s volunteer experience includes helping with the Farmer’s Market Kid’s Day as a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and helping with Vacation Bible School through the National Honor Society. At this time, she is uncertain of her main career goal but is interested in fine arts, natural sciences or graphic design, and plans to attend Alpena Community College in the fall.
The criteria used in selecting the recipients are a combination of community service, academic achievement and future goals, with an emphasis on community service. Both recipients have a long history of volunteering for their community.
