Infant baptism

held in Livonia

Addison Reese Antkowiak, 6-month-old daughter of Keith and Deanna Antkowiak of Troy, was baptized May 4, 2014, at Antiochian Orthodox Basilica of St. Mary in Livonia, with Father George Shalhoab officiating.

The godparents are Ramiz Kozouz and Irene Fakhouri. Grandparents are Walter and Carol Antkowiak of Spruce and Habib and Virginia Fakhouri of Troy.

MARSP holds

annual conference

Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel met May 8 at the Sanctuary Inn with 75 people attending the annual conference.

Area Regional Director Don Johnson presented information using a DVD concerning public school retirees insurance changes and other information that is of value for retirees to know about. Retirees were reminded that the VOC (Verification of Coverage) form will be coming out soon and to be sure and return it. Questions were asked and answered.

Jim Hart won the meal prize. Plants were won by Kay Beland, Geri Konwinski, Jackie Bey, Jeanette Amell, Dorothy Malinowski and John Anderson. State MARSP awarded prizes to Gladys Orban, Ben Grandlund and Bob Hoitenga.

Donna Beck was awarded the 2014 Recognition Award for the Alpena chapter for her many years of service as the chapter treasurer.

Breast Cancer

Support Group

to have speaker

Alpena Breast Cancer Support Group will meet May 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Friends Together Center, 105 Prentiss. Guest speaker, Dr. James Weeks, a radiologist from Alpena Regional Medical Center, will give a talk on what women need to know about genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer.

The group is for individuals touched by breast cancer, as well as their family members and friends. Participants are welcome to join in as the group shares their experiences and hopes, and learn new ways of dealing with this illness.

AmVets Post

meeting slated

AmVets Post 2497 will hold a monthly meeting at 6 p.m. May 19 at VFW Post 2496 on Connon Street. An election of officers will take place at this meeting.

The AmVets also announce that on May 24 they will be at Walmart from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. handing out “white clovers” in memory of veterans.
