MIDLAND-The Alpena High softball team improved to 17-4 and gave coach Paul Marwede a milestone win on Friday after beating Midland Dow 11-5 and 12-2 (five innings).
The two wins gave Marwede his 400th and 401st wins as Alpena’s coach.
As a team Alpena had 26 hits in the doubleheader and collected seven doubles.
In the opener, Alpena trailed 3-1 after three innings, but took the lead for good after an eight-run fourth inning.
Lauren Heath was the winning pitcher in the opener and Alex Peters also pitched.
In the nightcap, Kara Gehrke earned the win for Alpena.
Jessica Marwede finished the day with four hits, including two doubles.
Alpena plays in the Flint Kearsley Invitational beginning at 8 a.m. today and will open the tournament against Howell.
Alpena JV 10-10, Sault 7-0
The Alpena JV softball team earned a pair of wins at home on Thursday, beating Sault Ste. Marie 10-7 and 10-0.
Mykayla Price earned the win for the Wildcats in the opener, pitching 4 1/3 innings and striking out four. Lizzy Heath pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.
Price had two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Wildcats (13-1-1) and Jordan Modrzynski added two hits.
The two teams were tied 2-2 after one inning, but Alpena took a 3-1 lead in the second inning and then tacked on seven runs in the third inning.
Price was solid again for Alpena in the nightcap, striking out six in five innings to earn the win.
Alayna Nugent had two hits and two RBIs and Emily Edmonds had two hits. Madison Amlotte and Heath also had two RBIs each.
TRACK AND FIELD
Alpena boys take 2nd at Falcon Invite; Alpena girls finish 3rd.
WEST BRANCH-The Alpena boys track team took second out of six teams in the large school division of the Falcon Invitational at Ogemaw Heights on Friday.
The Wildcats finished with 171 points, behind Standish (187) and ahead of Ogemaw (85), Gladwin (84), Roscommon (53) and Harrison (47).
Freshman Mitchell Day won the 1,600 run (4:42.9) and the 3,200 run (10:14.4), beating teammate and fellow freshman Isaac Cross in both races.
Drew Shields won the 400 dash (51.11) and Brendan Cordes won the 110 hurdles (16.34).
Second place finishes for Alpena included: the 3,200 relay team of Clay Jacobs, RJ Centala, John Smith and Eli Martin (8:48.27); Elliott Zarins in the 100 dash (11.99) and 200 dash (24.34); Cordes in the 300 hurdles (42.38); Cross in the 1,600 run (4:52.7) and 3,200 run (10:39.3); Kolin Ghidoni in the 800 run (2:08.9) and the 1,600 relay team of Smith, Jacobs, Shields and Gavin Aikens (3:35.44).
Other finishers for Alpena were: 800 relay-3rd place (1:36.67); 400 dash-4th place (Smith, 54.8); 300 hurdles-5th place (Tanner Goebel, 44.29); 1,600 run-4th place (Martin, 4:59.8); 9th place (Ben Diamond, 5:09.5); 400 relay-4th place (47.84); 3,200 run-3rd place (Tellis Donajkowski, 10:49.6); 800 run-3rd place (Centala, 2:09.6); 4th place (Jacobs, 2:15.6); Pole Vault-5th place (Dylan Goike, 11-0); Long Jump-3rd place (Cordes, 19-9 1/4); 7th place (Aikens, 18-7); Discus-3rd place (Nick Lee, 124-8); 8th place (Randy Udell, 104-8); Shot Put-7th place (Lee, 40-7); 9th place (Trevor Roznowski, 37-8).
The Alpena girls team took third out of six teams, finishing with 116 points. Roscommon and Ogemaw Heights tied with 131 points.
Taylor Genschaw won the high jump (4-10) and long jump (15-7 3/4). Jenna Talbot won the 300 hurdles (51.65), finished second in the 110 hurdles (18.42), was third in the long jump (14-4) and took fourth in the pole vault (4-8).
Caitlin Dzuris won the shot put (30-7) and the 3,200 relay team of Mikayla Oliver, Taylor Kunath, Leah Centala and Dorothea Gotschell took second (11:23.96).
Other finishers for Alpena included: High Jump-3rd place (Katie Mack, 4-8); 1,600 run-4th place (Gotschell, 6:14); 400 dash-4th place (Mack, 1:11.66); 800 run-3rd place (Gotschell, 2:47.1); 3,200 run-4th place (Kunath, 13:47.1)
Alcona finishes 2nd at The Pines
BROOMFIELD-The Alcona golf team finished second out of 13 teams on Friday at The Pines golf course in Lake Isabella. The team was led by Walker Kelly’s 76 which took medalist honors and Lucas Weichel’s 84 which took a tied for fifth position individual honor. Both scores were great considering the windy stormy conditions.
The team travels to The Loon Golf Resort in Gaylord today.
JUNIOR HIGH TRACK
Thunder Bay takes 4th in TC
TRAVERSE CITY-The Thunder Bay Junior High track team competed in the Kiwanis Invitational in Traverse City on Thursday and finished fourth out of eight teams.
Alpena’s lone first-place finish went to the 800 relay team of Alex Arch, Bennett Speaks, Michael Clark and Isaac Jore (1:44.6) and the quartet finished just 2.1 seconds off the school record.
Arch took second in the high jump (5-4) and the 400 dash (56.87), finished .6 seconds off the school mark. Speaks took third in the pole vault (8-0).
Aden Smith took third in the 1,600 run (5:31.7) and the 400 relay team of Clark, Dakota Kerr, Fred Magdeleno and Robert Fairchild took third.
Other individual point winners were: Josh Smith in the 3,200 run, Clark in the 100 dash, Matt Brink in the 70 dash, Fairchild in the 200 dash and Tommy Mayes in the shot put.
The 1,600 relay team of Speaks, Jore, Matt Benedict and Nathan Trelfa took fourth and the 3,200 relay team of Jimmy Decker, Aden Smith, Josh Smith and Zac Zaborney took fifth.
Thunder Bay will compete at 4 p.m. on Monday against Cheboygan.
