AHS students teach swing dance to Besser third graders

Several high school students recently visited Besser Elementary School to introduce the third grade students of teacher Pat Hummel and Maureen Regan to swing dancing. The dancers included Sam Harsh, Caitlyn Borke, Courtney Marshall, Carlee Giordano and Mariah Purol.

The Besser students were introduced to composer Benny Goodman and the swing dance craze that began back in the 1930s and 1940s. The high school students shared some of the history of the dance, performed swing dances and then had the third grade classes dance along with them.

The Composer Program, taught by Bronwyn Woolman, introduces composers and their music to first, second and third grade students. The goal of the program is to expose children to classical music, along with some modern composers, and develop a lifelong love of music that can carry over to band, choirs and theater.
