Public forum tonight on water usage
In lieu of an increase in local water rates, Alpena County Library will host a water usage forum today. Titled “Save Money by Using Less Water,” the event will feature a panel of Alpena experts on water consumption. It will take place at 7 p.m. at the library.
“We believe that part of the library’s mission is to be an information resource, and we thought this was a subject a lot of people are interested in,” said Library Director Eric Magness-Eubank, who helped to plan the event.
Panel speakers include:
* Bob Young of Young Appliances, who will talk about water-saving appliances.
* Doug Pratt of Prattscape, who will discuss keeping yards green and flowers watered without running a hose all day.
* Al Weinkauf, of Weinkauf Plumbing and Heating, who will cover low flow faucets, shower heads and toilets.
* Mike Glowinski of United Water, who will talk about other water saving strategies.
“We thought it would be kind of fun to put together some people who could talk about some things homeowners could do on a proactive basis to make the situation better. It’s not a public forum to debate the issue,” said Magness-Eubank. “This is a way for homeowners to find positive things they can do about their own water usage.”
Magness-Eubank also said he believes the need to be more conservative with water consumption is a topic of interest not just locally, but around the country where other communities are facing similar challenges due to aging infrastructure.
“What’s happening here is not very much different from what’s going on in other places,” he said. “Basically all the infrastructure came in about the same time, so it’s all getting old at the same time.”
