ESCANABA-The Alpena softball team split a pair of games with Escanaba on Friday, winning the opener 8-3 and dropping the second game 8-7.
Lauren Heath pitched a complete game for Alpena in the opener. Alpena was tied 1-1 with the Eskymos before building a 6-1 lead and cruised from there. Alpena had eight hits in the game.
Alpena (6-2) trailed 6-1 entering the seventh inning in the nightcap and rallied back to tie the game 7-7. Escanaba was able to score the winning run however in the bottom of the inning.
Alpena coach Paul Marwede applauded his team’s all-around effort after the Wildcats scattered 11 hits and got contributions from everyone in the lineup.
“I was really proud of the comeback effort. We really grew as a team today and really grew more mentally tough.”
Alpena will play Marquette today and returns home Tuesday to host Ogemaw Heights.

Alpena girls finish fifth in Midland; Alpena boys take sixth
MIDLAND-The Alpena girls track team took fifth out of seven teams Friday at the Graves Relays in Midland.
Midland won with 142 points and Midland Dow was second with 81. Alpena finished with 48 points.
Medalers for Alpena were: Long Jump-2nd place (Taylor Genschaw, Katie Mack, Jenna Talbot); Discus-2nd place (Morgan Jewell, Stephanie McNeil, Courtney Wicklund); High Jump-3rd place (Genschaw, Mack, Brooke Burrone); Shot Put and Shot Put Relay (Jewell, McNeil, Wicklund, Sydnie Skomp); Pole Vault-4th place (Talbot, Amber Repke, Hannah MacDonald).
The Alpena boys track team took sixth place with 51 points. Midland won with 128 points, Flint Kearsley was second with 94 points and Midland Dow was third with 78 points.
Medalers for Alpena were: High Jump-2nd place (Jacob Barsen, Nick Samp, Clay Jacobs); Shot Put and Shot Put Relay-4th place (Jordan Ferguson, Nick Lee, Trevor Roznowski, Randy Udell); Pole Vault-3rd place (Dylan Goike, Alec LeTourneau); 6,400 relay-4th place (Isaac Cross, Ben Diamond, Tellis Donajkowski, Eli Martin); 1,600 relay-3rd place (RJ Centala, Gavin Aikens, John Smith, Drew Shields); 3,200 relay-4th place (Jacobs, Smith, Centala, Kolin Ghidoni); Sprint Medley Relay-3rd place (Emery Zarins, Elliott Zarins, Wade Roznowski, Shields).
Alpena hosts Ogemaw and Gaylord in a tri-meet on Wednesday.
