Helping to ‘pink’ things up
Accounting students at Alpena Community College are helping to Pink up the Town. They also invite local residents to join in their efforts that support the important cause of finding a cure for breast cancer.
Students, staff and anyone else who wants to help out are invited to stop by ACC’s Besser Tech Center Commons Area on April 26 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. to decorate a pink ribbon. In all, 300 of the ribbons will be decorated here in Alpena and then sent to Detroit in time for the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk that will take place there June 6.
The 300 ribbons will be among 10,000 other ones decorated by many other groups and organizations throughout the state. All the ribbons will be used to decorate every fence, parking meter, fire hydrant and lamp post along the 5K route.
The project in Alpena is spearheaded by ACC accounting instructor Lois Darga, who has gotten her students involved in Pink up the Town for the last four years.
“It’s just a wonderful cause and gives ACC students and staff a great opportunity to participate in something that’s not tied into a fundraiser,” said Darga, who is a member of the Michigan Association of CPAs, a major supporter of Pink up the Town.
Darga will have a variety of paints, markers, stickers, glitter and other fun craft items on hand for people to use in decorating the ribbons. She said this can be done in memory or honor of a loved one or just to support the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer.
