Editorial: A fitting, lasting tribute
Remembering the legacy of a loved one is a noble achievement.
Thanks to the family and friends of Susan Grulke, that indeed will occur each year now via a scholarship at Alpena Community College. Grulke died in April 2012 after battling a rare lung disease that at one point, forced her to have a double lung transplant.
A loving mother, wife and volunteer in the community, she also was a dedicated and hard-working journalist in the region, working both here at The Alpena News as well as the Presque Isle County Advance. We enjoyed our years working with Sue, who represented us well in Presque Isle County.
She covered stories thoroughly, but with compassion. Her perception about people was uncanny as she always seemed to pull details from folks, even those who initially seemed shy and hesitant to open up.
Starting next year, students attending ACC who are graduates of either Rogers City or Posen high schools would be eligible to apply, so long as they carry a 2.5 grade point average or higher.
While Sue no longer is with us, her memory and legacy continues on through this scholarship.
It is a fitting tribute to a wonderful person who touched the lives of many.
