Nominations sought for Outstanding Older Citizen
Alpena Senior Citizens Center currently is seeking nominations for its Outstanding Older Citizen Award.
The annual award is given out in May during Older American Month. The national month-long observance provides an opportunity for the community to applaud and recognize older Americans.
This year’s theme established by AOA is “Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow.” It focuses on encouraging older adults to advocate for themselves and take steps to remain active and independent, both of which speak to the very mission of the Senior Center and the numerous programs and services provided there.
Since 1963, communities across the country have shown their gratitude by celebrating Older Americans Month each May. This celebration was brought to Alpena County in 2007 by the Senior Center.
“It is an opportunity for our community to applaud and recognize older Americans for their positive contributions and many sacrifices that make a difference in and improve the lives of others,” said Senior Center Executive Director Grace Marshall.
The Senior Center celebrates the month by honoring two groups of seniors: the Outstanding Older Citizen, who is nominated by community members, and the 100+ Club, which is comprised of Alpena County residents who are 100 years of age or older. Nominees for the award should be someone who has served the community at large or who has touched the lives of others in some significant way.
“We are asking the community to join us in this celebration by nominating an Outstanding Older Citizen or someone who is 100 or older. They will be recognized during the Older Americans Month celebration to be held at the Senior Center on May 4th at 1 p.m.,” Marshall said.
Those nominating an individual should provide their name, contact information, and a short essay outlining the individual’s contributions and why you believe they should be honored with the award. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 18.
Nominations can be dropped off at the center at 501 River Street or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information, call Gudrun Seck at the Senior Center at 356-3585, ext. 23.
