Beaverton nips Mio in regional semifinal

TRAVERSE CITY-The Mio boys basketball team saw its season come to an end in the waning seconds of a Class C regional semifinal on Monday.

Beaverton scored in the closing seconds to defeat the Thunderbolts 48-47 during the semifinal game at Traverse City St. Francis.

Mio (19-3) held a 15-13 lead after one quarter and a 25-23 advantage at halftime. The Thunderbolts also led 39-35 after three quarters, but the Beavers outscored Mio 13-8 in the final quarter to win.

Spencer Johnston, Hogan Hayes and Eric Maxwell all scored 13 points for Beaverton.

The Beavers advance to a regional final on Wednesday against Traverse City St. Francis or East Jordan.

Ben Lubitz paced Mio with 27 points, Seth Thomey had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists and Aaron Georgieff had seven rebounds.
