Annual Boys and Girls Club fundraiser Friday

ALPENA – The annual St. Patrick’s Day: Mentoring for Kids’ Sake Bowling Party for the Alpena Boys and Girls Club will be Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the Thunder Bowl Lanes. This event helps the club with the cost of multiple mentoring programs throughout the year, including the Club Bigs program.

“Everything we do here is a form of mentoring,” Executive Director Brad Somers said. “Teams sign up to bowl ahead of time and those who participate get a free T-shirt and goodie bag. We have prizes for high and low games each hour and pin contests.”

The mentoring programs at the Boys and Girls Club affect not only the kids involved, but also the adults who give their time and energy to mentor them.

“All of this comes down to helping out with the mentoring programs,” Somers said. “We have around 54 community-based adult mentors who meet with the kids to do structured activities every month. Our Lunch Buddies program is also a great program where adults go eat lunch with elementary students. The students really look forward to these lunches.”

Students, adults and businesses from around the area already have signed up teams to bowl for the event, but Somers said anyone who still wants to get involved can call and sign up.

“It’s a great way for everybody to come together and help support mentoring in the community,” Somers said. “It’s really a lot of fun for everyone.”

All ages are welcome to participate. To get involved or to sign up a team to bowl call the Boys and Girls Club at 356-0214.
