Republicans back into doing the right thing
Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed S.B.1062 on Wednesday. The bill was the result of right-wing efforts to counter the national trend toward recognizing gays as having equal rights under the U.S. constitution.
It was painted as “religious freedom” legislation. However, the actual wording of the law would have allowed, for example, a Catholic waiter to refuse to serve a Jewish customer based on the waiters religious beliefs.
Apple, American Airlines, the NFL and the Chamber of Commerce were among dozens of corporations and national organizations who opposed this legislation. The common denominator of concern for these groups is money.
Once again the Republican party manages to do the right thing for all the wrong reasons.
