AUBURN HILLS-Onaway’s Joe Traynham won an individual state title at 112 pounds during the state wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday.

Traynham beat Hudson’s Roddy Hamdan in a 16-4 major decision to capture the title.

His teammate Isaac Nave finished fifth at 119 pounds after defeating Addison’s Jason Richardson 9-7.

Rogers City’s Andrew Selke (215) finished third after edging Jonesville’s Jon Rodriquez 4-3. His teammate Jake Sobeck (140) earned all-state honors for the second straight year after finishing seventh. He won a rematch with Holton’s Hayden Cregg and won by pin in three minutes.

Mio’s Patrick Stephens (103) took sixth after losing to New Lothrup’s Connor Krupp 4-0 in the fifth place match.


RC’s Darga falls in semifinals

BATTLE CREEK-Rogers City’s Bailey Budnik came up short in his bid for a second straight Division 4 individual bowling title and his teammate Alex Darga lost in the semifinals during the finals in Battle Creek Saturday.

Darga lost to St. Charles’ Kyle Tuttle in the semIfinals, 359-350. Tuttle went on to win the title by defeating St. Louis’ Zach Fenby 406-325.

Budnik finished ninth in the qualifying block, but lost to Tuttle 420-326 in the quarterfinals.

Other local finishers from the qualifying block included Rogers City’s Cory Grulke (23rd, 1,046) and Alcona’s Leigh Gibson (50th, 952).

In the Division 1 finals in Sterling Heights, Alpena’s Brady Marwede finished 29th in the qualifying block with a score of 1,262 and his teammate Will Rings was 53rd with a score of 1,153.


Hurons fall in quarterfinals

BATTLE CREEK-Two members of the Rogers City girls bowling team fell in the quarterfinals during the individual state bowling finals on Saturday in Battle Creek.

Alana Wirgau lost 395-358 to Vandercook Lake’s Jessica Bunch and Rebecca Bannasch lost 376-323 to Vandercook Lake’s Kelsea Richard.

Wirgau finished ninth in the qualifying block and defeated Unionville-Sebewaing’s Kyleigh McCarthy 357-278 in the round of 16. Bannasch was 10th in the qualifying block and topped Clinton’s Carol Heimerdinger 336-319 in the round of 16.

Two other bowlers also competed for Rogers City. Nicole Bannasch was 27th in the qualifying block with a score of 954. Jess Butera was 36th with a score of 912.

FAIRVIEW-The?Fairview Eagles ended its regular season with a tight game against the Cardinals on Saturday.

The Eagles played the Cardinals tight in the first quarter, but was outscored 23-11 in the second and never recovered.

Hudson?Szubelak had 30 points for Fairview.

The Eagles face Atlanta in the district semi-finals on Wednesday in?Au Gres.
