Alcona breezes past Tawas to district final

LINCOLN-The Alcona girls basketball team overcame a slow start against Tawas and beat the Braves 73-49 to take a spot in a Class C district final on Friday at 7 p.m. against Houghton Lake.

“We know that Tawas always brings something new to the game. We thought we had an idea, but they brought something different like they always do,” Alcona coach Brad Cole said.

The first quarter was fairly tight between the two teams. Alcona (18-3) scored more buckets than Tawas, but the Braves hit two treys to help hold the game to an 11-10 Tigers’ lead.

The Cole sisters were quiet in the first for Alcona, but Kendra Cole hit a bucket 20 seconds into the second quarter to pull Alcona to a 13-10 lead. Her sister Karina Cole hit her first bucket of the night with 2:31 left in the half. She scored five straight points to give the Tigers a 30-21 lead at half.

Karina led Alcona with 18 points.

The Tigers’ offense seemed to finally figure out the Braves’ defensive strategy and used the height of Kendra Cole and Alissa Terpstra at the post to shut down Tawas on the rebound.

Karina Cole came out strong in the third with two back-to-back treys to give Alcona a 36-23 lead. Kaley Kopkau of the Braves came alive in the third quarter and picked up 10 of the Braves 19 points.

The Braves were led by Jenna Szostak with 22 points while Belle Flory had 16.

Kendra Cole also hit a trey in the third to give the Tigers a 51-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. She had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Tigers held the Braves to 11 points while picking up 22 to seal the deal and a spot in the district finals.
