Alpena icers facing Vikings for 3rd time

The Alpena High School hockey team is hoping the third time will be the charm against Cadillac this season.

The Wildcats will face off against the Vikings at 7 p.m. tonight in a Division 3 pre-regional game in Gaylord. The winner advances to play Gaylord on Thursday.

Cadillac has already gotten the better of the Wildcats (14-11-1) twice this season. The Vikings topped Alpena 2-1 in Cadillac on Dec. 6 and beat the Wildcats 5-4 in overtime earlier this month at Northern Lights Arena.

Alpena led 4-3 in the third period of the most recent meeting, but was hurt by penalties in the final period before Ryan Morse capped a four-goal night for Cadillac with the game-winner in overtime.

Alpena has come up short against Cadillac this season, but the playoffs favor the Wildcats. Last season Zach Nash scored in double-overtime to give Alpena a spot in the regional final.

The Wildcats closed out the regular season last week with a 9-1 win over Gaylord at home and a 6-0 loss to Bay City Central on the road.
