Street Cats swept by Firehawks
SAULT STE. MARIE-The Alpena Street Cats dropped a weekend series to the Soo Firehawks in Midwest Junior Hockey League action, losing 9-0 on Sunday and 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday.
Soo fired 53 shots at Alpena’s Keegan McGraw and Nicholas Murphy, the MWJHL’s leading scorer had two goals and an assist.
Murphy 45 goals and 40 assists in 33 games.
Anthony Benvenuti stopped 29 shots for the Firehawks and seven players lit the lamp for Soo in the win.
On Saturday, both teams ended up in a shootout which went to 12 attempts before Steven Smoltz scored to give the Firehawks the win.
Cody Anderson had Soo’s other shootout goal and Andrei Kiselev scored for Alpena.
Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Street Cats (21-15-1) took a 2-1 lead after two periods with goals from Savelii Skurikhin and Vladislav Khasanov.
Khasanov scored again at the 7:09 mark of the third period to tie the game 3-3.
Alpena outshot Soo 36-32 and McGraw made 28 saves.
The two losses leave Alpena in fourth place in the standings with 43 points, though the Street Cats have already clinched a playoff spot.
The Street Cats will host Soo on Friday at Northern Lights Arena at 7 p.m. and will then host the Detroit Fighting Irish for games on Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
