PETOSKEY-The Alpena boys basketball team overcame a third quarter slump to beat Petoskey 52-43 on Friday and to claim sole ownership of the Big North Conference championship.
The last time the Alpena boys were the Big North champions was 2008.
“Winning a conference is a sign of being the best team of the year. There’s nothing better than being the conference champ. It means you were good all year, not just a game,” Alpena coach John Pintar said.
Alpena (16-1, 10-1 Big North) was down 11-10 after the first quarter, but pulled into a 23-19 lead at the half.
Petoskey pulled ahead 38-35 after three.
“It wasn’t pretty for us. We had a lead at half, but we did not play a good third quarter. We made a lot of mistakes on defense and gave up too many points,” Pintar said.
The Wildcats came out strong in the fourth quarter to outscore the Northmen 17-5. They held Petoskey scoreless until the last 30 seconds of the game.
“It was a complete reversal from third to the fourth. I’m so proud of our kids the way they dug down deep. It wasn’t easy and we got everything we had from them and we found a way to win,” Pintar said.
Brad Styma led Alpena witwh 14 while Andy Marwede had 13.
Aaron Lee hit 12 for Petoskey
