Street Cats Saturday, Sunday split guarantees playoff games

BLOOMINGTON,IL-The Alpena Street Cats lost 5-3 on?Saturday to?Bloomington but won 5-1 on?Sunday. It clinched a playoff spot among the top four teams in the Midwest Junior Hockey League.

The Street Cats (21-14) fell behind on Saturday when Bloomington’s Justin Kree picked up a goal 38 seconds into the game. Peter Carlin scored a power play goal 8:40 into the second to give Bloomington a 2-0 lead

The Street Cats struck back four minutes later when Andrei Kiselev dropped a goal at 12:24 into the second.

Kharlamov picked up a goal 30 seconds later from an assist by Kiselev and Yanovich to tie up the game 2-2 going into the third.

Unfortunately for the Street Cats, Jorey Skelton picked up a goal at 6:18 and 7:51 into the third to give the Blaze a 4-2 lead. Vladimir Mokrousov picked up a power play off a Kiselev and Pavel Bocharov assist at 13:14 into the period to bring Alpena one back at 4-3.

Bloomington’s Peter Carlin hit an open net goal with 15 seconds left to give the Blaze the win.

Alpena goalie Aleksandr Shishkin picked up the loss, giving up two goals on seven shots. Keegan McGraw had 17 saves on 19 shots.

The Street Cats scored first on Sunday when Nicholas Hartmann picked up a goal at 4:34 into the first period off assists from Garrett Bailey and Anton Shtykov. Bloomington’s Dylan Farmer answered back at 9:08, but Alpena left the second with a 2-1 lead after Edgar Kharlamov hit a power play goal at 14:50 in the first with assists from Mokrousov and Andrei Yanovich.

Alpena picked up three unanswered goals in the second. Kiselev hit a goal at 5:53 with an assist by Yanovich. Bocharov hit an unassisted goal at 12:10 in the second while Bailey hit a short handed unassisted goal two minutes later.

Shishkin picked up the win for the Street Cats with 13 saves. Bloomington’s Salangin had the loss, giving up all five goals and stopping 11 shots. Kent Nusbaum stopped a perfect 12 of 12.

Alpena travles to Sault Saint Marie to take on the Soo Firehawks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
