SAULT STE. MARIE-The Alpena High School girls basketball fell behind early against Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday and fell short in a rally during a 53-38 loss.
Elizabeth Trelfa led Alpena (4-11) with 12 points and Adrianna Hatch added nine.
“Sault is probably the best team we’ve played all year. They’re quick getting to the ball and that’s the type of team we need to beat in the tournament,” Alpena coach Dan Arsenault said. “We shot well from outside, but never cut into their lead.”
Sault led by as many as 13 in the first quarter before Alpena cut the deficit to three in the second quarter.
Alpena hosts Cadillac on Friday in a Hoops for Hope Pink Game.
Alpena’s JV team won 48-41 and Jessica Marwede led the Wildcats with 11 points.
Alpena’s freshman team lost 50-20.
Hillman 72, Atlanta 18
HILLMAN-The Hillman girls basketball team earned its second win of the week on Wednesday and got to the .500 mark, beating Atlanta 72-18.
Hillman (8-8) led 23-1 after one quarter, 40-1 at halftime and 62-12 after three quarters.
Jensen Tchorzynski led Hillman with 20 points and Vanessa Schook added 14.
Hillman will play at Alcona tonight is hoping for a better result than the last time the two teams met.
“The first time we played them, we played a good first half and fourth quarter. The third quarter got away from us,” Hillman coach John Kuzewski said. “We need to come out with intensity and play 32 minutes of good basketball because Alcona’s a very good team.”
Fairview 54, Alba 9
FAIRVIEW-Logan Winton scored 14 points and the Fairview girls basketball team improved to 9-7 with a 54-9 win over Alba on Wednesday.
Fairview led 34-0 at halftime and 46-7 after three quarters.
Fairview plays at Hale tonight.
Rogers City 41
LINCOLN-Karina Cole scored 20 points and the Alcona girls basketball team defeated Rogers City for the second time in three days, topping the Hurons 48-41 on Wednesday.
Alcona (14-3) led 31-22 at the half and 37-33 after three quarters.
“We won tonight but we are still not playing like we should. We have to be more consistent,” Alcona coach Brad Cole said.
Kendra Cole added eight points and four rebounds for Alcona.
Logan Fleming led Rogers City (11-5) and Courtney Streich added 11.
Alcona hosts Hillman tonight while Rogers City plays at Whittemore-Prescott.
Alcona’s JV team beat Rogers City 54-22.
Alpena falls in team regional
DAVISON-The Alpena High School wrestling team came out on the short end during a Division 1 team regional on Wednesday, losing to Grand Blanc 63-15.
RJ Centala (140) and Felix Suszek (215) earned pins for the Wildcats and Dakota Patterson (160) won by decision.
“We battled and none of our guys got pinned in 10 seconds or anything like that. Grand Blanc just has a very tough lineup,” Alpena coach Jake Stenz said.
Davison won the regional, beating Grand Blanc 54-17.
Alpena will have three wrestlers completing in an individual regional in Oxford on Saturday-Centala, Suszek and Austin Hawks.
Hurons fall in team regional
MANISTIQUE-The Rogers City wrestling team lost 39-24 to Norway during a Division 4 team regional on Wednesday.
Winners for Rogers City were: Justin Saile (125), Noah Sobeck (130), Cam Urban (135), Jake Sobeck (152), Jared Lafleche (171) and Andrew Selke (285).
Rogers City finished the year with a team record of 28-7.
“I couldn’t expect more our of these guys. We were shorthanded all year and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Rogers City coach Pat Lamb said.
Rogers City will host an individual regional on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Mancelona 61, Onaway 43
MANCELONA-Brandon Dingman scored 31 points and Mancelona got the better of the Onaway boys basketball team on Wednesday, besting the Cardinals 61-43.
Onaway trailed 21-10 after the first quarter and 30-13 at the half.
Joe O’Bradovich led Onaway (11-4) with 20 points, Andrew Prow added nine points and Carlos Bautista had eight.
Onaway hosts Inland Lakes on Friday.
