Sara Kraa Memorial Scholarship established at ACC

The Alpena Community College Foundation announces the creation of the Sara Kraa Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund was established by the Flashing Chicks, a Red Hat Society chapter, which was originally organized by Kraa in 2004, and for which she served as the queen mother.

The Sara Kraa Memorial Scholarship provides a $250 award to a full-time student enrolled in ACC’s Level 1 (LPN) Nursing Program. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA, academic performance and financial need will be considered. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate the commitment and compassion for caring for the sick and suffering. Candidates must submit an essay explain their interest in becoming a nurse and two letters of recommendation must also be submitted.

Kraa’s colleagues shared that she was one of a kind, and her overwhelming compassion for those who were sick and suffering was present in her daily life. Her ambitious, non-tiring dedication to her patients and co-workers was endless. Kraa was an advocate for education and believed that nurses are truly valued.

Kraa received her Associates Degree in Nursing from Delta College and worked at Saginaw General for 18 years. In 1988, she moved to Alpena and worked at Alpena Regional Medical Center for 15 years, retiring in 2005 as the charge nurse of the Surgery Department. Kraa passed away on Feb. 19, 2006 of pancreatic cancer.

The deadline to apply for the Sara Kraa Memorial Scholarship is March 24, 2014. Applications can be downloaded at by clicking on “Future Students” and then “Scholarships.”
