GAYLORD-The Alpena boys continued its winning streak on Saturday by routing Gaylord 78-44.

The Wildcats (8-1, 5-1 Big North) utilized a scoring rush of 24 in the first and 28 in the third to pull to a commanding lead that Gaylord couldn’t overcome.

“We just had excellent balance throughout the game. We hit 10 three pointers in the game and just shot the ball really well in general. We just did what we needed to do,” Alpena coach John Pintar said.

Cody Tucker led with 19 points while Andy Marwede had 16. Brad Styma chipped in with 15 points while Tyler Pintar had 13.

Alpena hosts Traverse City West on Tuesday.

“It’s going to be a big game for us. They’ve been playing really well and getting healthy. We’re really looking forward to it and the chance to keep it going,” Pintar said.

The junior varsity team lost a tight 58-50 game. Austin Hemmingson led with 15 points.

The freshmen also lost a tight game, 76-74. Bailey Marquardt led with 26 points while Cameren DeCaire had 14. Jacob Vought piched in with 11.


Alpena 5, Petoskey 0

PETOSKEY-The Alpena High School hockey team earned its second Big North Conference win in as many days with a 5-0 victory over Petoskey on Saturday.

Jared Plume netted a hat trick and added an assist for the Wildcats (11-8-1), who defeated Traverse City West 4-1 on Friday at home.

Tait Froggett and Cole Cosbitt had single tallies for the Wildcats and assists went to Joey Bracken, Reed Hamp, Zack Kendziorski and Nick Baranyai.

Alpena goaltender Jesse Boilore made 22 saves.

“The kids are coming together and working hard as a team,” Alpena coach Pete Doubek said. “I think Jesse’s giving them that confidence and it helps that guys like Zack and Shane Dawson are staying healthy.”

The Wildcats play at Gaylord on Saturday.


Hurons win Straits Area/NSL Challenge

ST. IGNACE-The Rogers City wrestling team won the Straits Area/North Star League Challenge on Saturday, topping the field with 163 points.

Rogers City won over conference foe Whittemore-Prescott, which had 145 1/2 points. Sault Ste. Marie was third with 135 1/2 points, Mio was fourth with 123 points and Rudyard was fifth with 106 points.

Justin Saile (125), Cam Urban (130) and Jake Sobeck (145) all earned first-plce finishes for Rogers City. Noah Sobeck (135), Austin Bober (160) and Andrew Selke (215) all took second place.

“It was awesome. The team wrestled very well. I wish we’d picked up some third places, but they did well,” Rogers City coach Pat Lamb. “This is a very together team, they root for each other and they deserve (success) because they work so hard.

Tommy Vogelheim (103), Jack Ryan (152) and Jared LaFleche (171) all took fourth place for Rogers City. Tristan Baller (112) and Cole Henry (140) each won a match for the Hurons and Jon Molgan wrestled in his first varsity match.

Rogers City will wrestle in team districts at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Charlevoix and will wrestle in individual districts at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Newberry.
