HALE-The Alcona girls basketball team notched another win on Thursday in a 71-27 win over Hale.

Alcona (10-2, 8-1 North Star League) led 21-5 after the first quarter and 34-9 at the half. It pulled into a 51-19 lead by the third quarter.

Karina Cole picked up 41 points for Alcona and Sydney Pierce had six.

Kendra Cole had five points and 11 rebounds while Megan Quick pitched in with nine assists.

“We played a quality Hale team tonight which really helped tune up our defense. We were very aggressive and ran our offense well,” Alcona coach Brad Cole said.

Alcona’s junior varsity team picked up a 51-22 win.

Fairview 56, Hillman 50

HILLMAN-It was a tight game until the end, but the Fairview girls basketball team utilized a strong fourth quarter to push past Hillman(4-6) on Thursday.

“Fairview just executed better than us in the fourth quarter. It was tight the whole way and the teams were very evenly matched,” Hillman coach John Kuzewski said.

Fairview (6-5, 5-4 North Star League) led 15-14 in the first quarter while the half ended with a 28-28 tie. The game stayed tight at the end of the third in a 43-43 tie.

“It was a big win on the road for sure. Our run in the fourth quarter was what made the difference,” Fairview coach Marc Winton said. Fairview outscored Hillman 13-7 in the fourth.

Hillman hosts Bellaire tonight.

Gaylord St. Mary 43, Onaway 31

ONAWAY-The Onaway girls basketball team came within six points of overtaking Gaylord St. Mary, the number four team in the state in Class D, but couldn’t pull it off in a 43-31 loss.

The Cardinals (6-7, 4-6 Ski Valley) trailed 15-4 at the end of the first quarter and 17-8 in the second quarter. They made up a lot of lost ground in the third quarter by narrowing the spread to 38-25, but a few last minute treys and free throws sealed the deal.

Erika Price led Onaway with 19 points.

“We played the number four team in the state and we gave them a real good game,” Onaway coach Marty Mix said.

Onaway travels to Mancelona on Tuesday.

Rogers 71, Atlanta 3

ROGERS CITY-Cassidy Purgiel, Logan Fleming and Courtney Streich each scored 11 points and the Rogers City girls basketball team beat Atlanta 71-3 on Thursday.

Rogers City (8-3) led 42-2 at halftime.

The Hurons will play at Au Gres on Tuesday and at Oscoda on Thursday.


Onaway 66, Joburg 58

JOHANNESBURG-Joe O’Bradovich scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and the Onaway boys basketball team earned a 66-58 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston on Wednesday.

Onaway (8-2, 7-1 SV) led 15-14 after one quarter, but trailed 29-21 at halftime. Onaway led 45-40 after three quarters and edged the Cardinals in the fourth quarter 21-18.

Joe Sigsby added 12 points and four assists for Onaway. Andrew Prow had 12 points, all on three pointers and Chris Cleaver and Pat Dunn had eight points each.
