WEST BRANCH-The Alpena boys basketball team overcame a slow start and used a big third-quarter run to push past Ogemaw Heights 67-47 Tuesday in a Big North Conference game.

Andy Marwede scored 24 points, Tyler Pintar added 18 and Brad Styma had 10 for the Wildcats (6-1) who trailed 18-11 after the first quarter, but turned on the jets the rest of the way.

“We got off to a slow start defensively, but we picked it up,” Alpena coach John Pintar said. “In the third quarter we played really good defensively and created turnovers which led to easy buckets for us. That third quarter made the difference.”

Alpena led 31-27 at halftime and 51-35 after three quarters.

Ben Hartley led the Falcons with 13 points.

Alpena will host Traverse City Central on Friday.

Alpena’s JV team won 60-39. Blase Landon led Alpena with 12 points and Casey Woytaszek added eight.

Alpena’s freshman team topped the Falcons 55-34. Camren DeCaire led Alpena with 10 points and Jacob Vought added nine.

Onaway 60,

Forest Area 56

ONAWAY-Joe O’Bradovich scored 30 points including 16 in the fourth quarter and the Onaway boys basketball team stayed perfect in Ski Valley Conference play with a 60-56 win over Forest Area on Tuesday.

O’Bradovich started the second quarter off with a dunk, but cut himself on the rim and missed a significant portion of the game before returning. Onaway (7-1, 5-0 SV) trailed 32-23 at the half and 41-39 after three quarters before outscoring Forest Area 21-15 in the final period.

“We started out and had a good first quarter, but in the second quarter we kind of slow down a little bit and O’Bradovich cut his finger,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “We felt like we were the better team, but we had to come out and play like we knew how.”

O’Bradovich had eight rebounds to go with his 30 points, Carlos Bautista had 10 rebounds and Chris Cleaver had eight points.

Onaway plays at Bellaire on Thursday.



Fairview 32, Mio 30

MIO-Mace Ellis scored with eight seconds left and the Fairview girls basketball team beat Mio in a 32-30 nail-biter on Tuesday in Mio.

Fairview (5-4) led 26-23 entering the fourth quarter and controlled the action early in the period, but Mio (5-4) hit three triples to eventually take the lead.

Allyson Winton tied the game 30-30 with 27 seconds left after a free throw and Ellis took over from there.

Logan Winton led Fairview with 11 points.

Leslie Asman led Mio with nine points and Jalen DeFlorio added eight points.

Fairview trailed 8-6 after one quarter and 16-14 at halftime.

The Eagles host Posen on Friday.
