Zonta donates $30,766 to ARMC
Members of the Zonta Club of Alpena recently presented Ann Diamond, Alpena Regional Medical Center development director, with the net proceeds of $30,766 from their 2013 Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/5K Run.
Despite the rain on Oct. 5, 2013, approximately 650 individuals participated in the seventh annual event that was held at the Fletcher Street Brewing Company. Since the inception of the event in 2007 the Zonta Club of Alpena has been dedicated to raising awareness regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer as well as raising funds for the Alpena Regional Medical Center.
“Alpena Regional Medical Center is truly proud to be the recipient of the funds from the 2013 Zonta Walk. Knowing that these funds were raised in our community and will benefit those in our community is wonderful,” Diamond said. “With the proceeds from this event in previous years, mammograms have been done, cancer has been diagnosed, and individuals are living normal lives because of the screenings from the Mammography Subsidy Fund and the early detection of cancer.
This year’s check will be used to replenish the fund for mammography services for women in northeast Michigan.
“I applaud the Zonta Club, the participants, the supporters, and the businesses that make this such a successful event,” Diamond said.
To date Zontians have raised a total of $162,950 for ARMC and enhanced the breast health services for thousands of women within the hospital’s five-county service area. Approximately 260 women received mammograms during 2013, utilizing a total of $28,098 from the Mammography Subsidy Fund. Together with ARMC, Zontians have helped a total of 1,966 area women receive mammograms with funds from the Mammography Subsidy Fund.
Zonta Club of Alpena member and chair of the event, Penny Boldrey said, “These funds were raised by community members, our business supporters, cancer survivors, their families and friends. It’s humbling to see hundreds of individuals come together and support this cause. Our event is truly a grass-roots endeavor and we are thrilled to share that all of the money raised in our community stays in our community and helps under-insured and uninsured women.”
Partners in the 2013 event included sponsors Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union, Alpena Radiology P.C., Alpena Regional Medical Center, Besser Credit Union and Stoney Acres Winery. A total of 41 area businesses lent their financial support with sponsorships ranging from $250 to $4,500.
Plans are underway for the 2014 Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/5K Run which will take place on Oct. 4.
