SAULT STE. MARIE- Six different players scored for the Alpena hockey team in a 6-1 win over Jeffers on Friday in the Sault Lions Tournament.
Jesse Boilore had 29 saves for the Wildcats and Tait Froggett, Nick Baranyai, Shane Dawson, Jared Plume, Ryan Spencer and Cade MacArthur all scored for Alpena.
Froggett and Dawson each had three assists for Alpena, which built a 3-0 lead after the first period and never looked back.
“Our teamwork was amazing. We had a real strong first period, we let up a little bit in the second period and we closed it out in the third period,” Alpena coach Pete Doubek said. “We talked before the game and told the kids, ‘Don’t wait,’ and they came out skating pretty hard.
The Wildcats are back in action today against Sault Ste. Marie.
Posen 80, Atlanta 9
ATLANTA-The Posen girls basketball earned its ninth straight win of the season against Atlanta Friday night, beating the Huskies 80-9.
Korynn Hincka led the way, scoring 31 points for the Vikings. Ashley Meyers added 15 and Anjelica Patterson contributed 13 to the board.
Lacy Ferguson scored five of Atlanta’s nine points.
Posen scored 33 points in the first quarter. The team scored early and often, giving an easy win, according to Posen coach Karl Momrik. Posen built its lead in the second quarter with a half-time score of 58-3 and 66-9 in the third quarter.
The Vikings are now 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the North Star League. Posen will be playing Arenac Eastern Tuesday at home at 7 p.m.
Onaway 49, Pellston 34
PELSTON-The Onaway girls basketball team had a 15-point win over Pellston Friday night, beating the Hornets 49-34.
Devon Bristley led the Cardinals (5-3, 4-3 Ski Valley) with 13 points. Jade Galer and Lexi Szymoniak scored 10 points each.
All quarters favored Onaway, starting with a narrow 9-8 lead after one quarter and 21-16 at the half. Onaway led 37-23 after three quarters.
Onaway plays again Wednesday at Forest Area at 5 p.m.
Mio 44, Hillman 36
MIO Sisters Jalen and Cassidy DeFlorio led the Mio (3-2) girls basketball team, scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds, and seven points and four rebounds, respectively in a 44-36 win for Hillman on Friday.
Leading players for Hillman were Jensen Tchorzynski with 17 points and Vanessa Schook with nine.
Mio led 11-6 after the first quarter, and18-17 at the half. Mio picked up in the third quarter, leading 34-27.
“Everybody played really well. We had great defense tonight. I was very happy to see more players on the scoreboard,” Mio coach Helen DeFlorio said.
The Thunderbolts will host Rogers City Tuesday.
Arenac Eastern 40, Fairview 30
FAIRVIEW-The Fairview girls basketball team kept pace with Arenac Eastern for a half on Friday, but ultimately lost 40-30.
Both team were tied 10-10 after one quarter and Fairview led 23-21 at the half. Arenac outscored Fairview 9-4 in the third quarter to take a 30-25 lead and put the game away in the final quarter, outscoring Fairview 10-3.
Chantel Murdock led Arenac with 16 points and Kyleigh Desjaris led Fairview with 10.
HILLMAN- The Hillman boys basketball team overcame a 9-0 deficit in the first quarter to take a 77-57 win over Fairview on Friday.
The Tigers (6-1) ended the half up 38-33, but outscored the Eagles 25-6 in the third to take a 63-39 lead.
Top scorers for Hillman included Ty Jones with 15 and Gunnar Libby with 13. Mike Klein pitched in 12 while Mason VanPamel had 10.
Hudson Szubelak scored 24 for Fairview while Austin Handrich had 19.
