Posen boys hoops team tops Hurons

POSEN-The Posen boys basketball team ended 2013 on the best note possible.

Nick Hincka scored 24 points, Travis Sharpe added 13 and the Vikings earned their second win over Rogers City this month, topping the Hurons 61-27 at Posen High School.

Posen (5-1) seized control of the game from the get-go, opening the contest on a 9-0 run in the first 1:15 that prompted a timeout from Rogers City coach Jesse Streich to get his team to refocus.

The Vikings ended the first quarter with a 17-3 and hounded the Hurons with a relentless defense as well as a deadly shooting touch from the outside. Posen connected seven times from beyond the arc with Hincka draining four treys in the first half.

“We played a lot better. Played a lot better man-to-man, which its about time we did, but I was really happy with our overall effort on offense and defense,” Posen coach Matt Ponik said. “I feel offensively and defensively we put two good halves together tonight and some of the things that were our weaknesses, we turned into strengths which I was really happy about.”

Rogers City had trouble getting much going offensively and its first two trips down the floor resulted in turnovers which prompted the timeout from Streich. The Hurons went scoreless for nearly three minutes in the first quarter before Chris Lopez finally scored and hit a follow-up free throw to make the score 9-3.

From there however it was slim pickings offensively for Rogers City who couldn’t contend with Posen much in the paint and couldn’t get around the Vikings’ defense. Nearly eight minutes passed between Lopez’s bucket and the next score for the Hurons, which came with 5:28 remaining in the second quarter.

Hincka caught fire in the second half, scoring 13 points and leading Posen to a commanding 36-9 halftime lead. Leon Beccard and Matthew Wisniewski were among other Posen players to knock down shots from outside and Ponik was pleased to see his players share the wealth on offense.

“We were finally able to spread the ball around. Nick Hincka’s leading the team for the most part, but we want to get everybody involved and tonight was a well-rounded effort, which is what I want so they can’t just key on one guy,” Ponik said.

Beccard added 12 points for Posen and Caleb Karsten led Rogers City with eight while Lopez had seven.

Posen wasn’t as imposing in the third quarter, but the Vikings still managed to hold a 47-14 lead after three quarters and limited the Hurons to just two field goals in the period.
