American Legion Auxiliary plans Christmas Bake and Box Sale
At the November meeting of William F. Weine American Legion Auxiliary, plans were put into motion for a Christmas Bake Sale and Surprise Box Sale to be held Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Post Home, M-32-W.
Members will meet at the Post Home on Dec. 6 at noon to bake cookies, breads and pies. Ingredients and baking pans/sheets will have to be brought in. Lunch at the bake sale will include hot dogs, stew and chicken noodle soup at a cost of $2.
The annual Christmas party is planned for Dec. 12 with a potluck supper served at 6 p.m., followed by the regular meeting. Those who wish can bring a $2 dollar gift exchange item.
Secretary Pat LaHaie reported that she had purchased gift certificates from Kmart and McDonald’s, which she sent to the Grand Rapids Veterans Home for the annual Christmas gift shops. A thank-you note was received from Sarah Brooks, the hospital representative at the home, acknowledging the donation.
Due to limited funds, the organization voted to send only one representative to the Girls State session in June. Hats, gloves, scarves and toys were collected to be donated to the Sunrise Mission for the holidays.
The auxiliary’s 90th anniversary, which was to be celebrated on Jan. 11, has been postponed until May or June when weather conditions are more favorable.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for the Christmas supper and meeting on Dec. 12. All members and guests are welcome.
Thanksgiving cards were sent to Jean Henry, Mabel Cole and Pauline King.
The 50/50 drawing was won by Carol Belanger and door prizes were awarded to Kathy Wolshon, Marie Scagel, Gere Romel, Diane Struzik, Brenda Craft, Ursula Purol, Judy Vandervort, Jan Baumgart, President Michelle LaBonte, Mabel Cole and Belanger.
A congratulations card was sent to Diane Speer of The Alpena News for receiving the Athena Award. She has contributed much to the auxiliary’s programs over the years.
