Commissioners award insurance bid

ALPENA – The Alpena County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a bid from Lappan Insurance Agency for the county’s insurance needs at its meeting on Tuesday.
The vote 4-3 in favor of choosing Lappan Agency, Commissioners Tom Mullaney, Cam Habermehl and Lyle VanWormer were the dissenting votes . A bid was placed from Alpena Agency also, but the bid from Lappan was lower with the bids ranging from approximately $82,000 to $89,000.
“Both policies were similar,” Habermehl said. “We had some problems with the previous company that we had had, but they promised to be more attentive now and take care of the issues, and I’m sure they will. The policies were pretty close.”
The county has had a policy for the last four years with Alpena Agency, and has been pleased with its services, but due to the financial constraints on the county due to the child care budget, the board voted to go with the lesser bid.
“Alpena Agency, when they came in, they reviewed our policy basically on a regular basis and they came back with different ways to change it to save money, or what they thought we needed that we didn’t have,” Habermehl said. “They did an excellent job.”
Commissioner Robert Adrian said both bids were reviewed, both from two local refutable companies that have worked with the county, and the question came down to going for the more expensive policy versus one that was a little cheaper.
