Common Core not the solution for education

Common Core has been flying under the radar for years and now that states have adopted it we have discovered a problem. As Bill Whittle puts it – “The problem is the entire idea: one massive, totalitarian, Federal educational standard that will be applied to every schoolhouse in the country.” Questionable standards at best.

It 2007 a group governors and state education chiefs established a new set of standards (in English and Math) to prepare students for college and careers. However according to Sandra Stotsky, who served on the Common Core validation committee from 2009-2010, the English Language Arts committee included no English professors or high-school English teachers. She refused to sign off on the standards and 10 of the top professors of English literature and math in the country are opposed to these standards.

Dr. James Milgram, Professor of Math at Stanford University, had such serious reservations about the fuzzy math of Common Core that Milgram refused to sign off on the standards’ adequacy – as an official member of the Common Core Validation Committee. Milgram described the standards as having “extremely serious failings” and reflecting “very low expectations.”

According to Glyn Wright, executive director of Eagle Forum “The math standard focuses on investigative math, which has been shown to be a disaster. With the new math standard. There are no longer absolute truths. So t times 4 can now equal 11 so long as a student can effectively explain how they reached that answer.”

Parents are fighting back as they are discovering sexually inappropriate material and left wing politics sneaking into lesson plans. Teachers are speaking out against the lack of resources, planning, creativity and flexibility. Data will be collected by testing companies and shared with the federal government tracking students grades and career suitability.
