APS, Meijer set to close on property sale
ALPENA – Alpena Public Schools is set to close on a 1.44-acre parcel north of the railroad tracks with Meijer, Inc. for $75,000 on Wednesday.
“Right now we’re in the process of closing,” Assistant Superintendent for Operations Diane Block said. “The closing is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, and will be done remotely, not actually in person.”
The paperwork is in process, and Block said it should be ready by Wednesday.
The parcel of property will be located on the southern edge of the new Meijer store property, north of the railraod tracks and Thunder Bay Junior High.
APS isn’t sure what it plans to do with the money from the pending sale, but is planning to discuss it at the next property meeting.
Meijer hopes to break ground at its new location in spring 2014, depending on paperwork and how quickly the planning process moves along. The store would include a convenience store with gas pumps, over 700 space parking lot, and a garden center. The company would be investing approximately $20 million into the new 192,000 square foot store.
