Both Alpena library millages pass

ALPENA – Alpena County Library officials knew the public has always been supportive of past millage requests, but due to a loss of revenue it was counting on more support than normal on Tuesday – and got it.

Voters in Alpena County overwhelmingly approved a pair of millage requests that will ensure the library will be able to maintain and expand its current programs, as well as continue to maintain and replace structural issues that need addressing.

The first request was a renewal for 10 years at the cost of .0.75 mill. It was approved 3,197 for and 831 against. The second was for five years at 0.25 mill and passed 2,511 yes and 1,493 no.

Director Eric Magness-Eubank said the library board knew times are tough for people financially and knew two requests could be a tough sell. He said the support residents gave the library has surpassed his expectations.

“We’ve known for a long time that the community loves the library, but I was astonished by just overwhelming the results were,” Magness-Eubank said. “We are so grateful for the support. We were a little concerned. Everything sounded good, but you never know how things will play out and you can’t take anything for granted.

“We realize this is a sacrifice for many in the community and that maybe there were some that wanted to vote yes, but were forced to vote no for financial reasons. Given the times we are in it is really overwhelming.”
