Rogers City wins North Star League Championship

ROGERS CITY-No one has gotten the better of the Rogers City volleyball team in North Star League competition this season.

That trend continued Saturday after the Hurons won the North Star League Championship on their home floor, beating Mio in a best-of-three match, 25-11 and 25-14.

Rogers City finished 10-0 in conference play in the regular season and defeated three teams on Saturday to win the tournament.

“It was awesome, a very awesome day for us,” Rogers City coach Jackie Quaine said. “The team played together and we were very balanced on the court.”

In the semifinals, Rogers City defeated Posen 25-11 and 25-19. The Hurons got a first round bye and went on to defeat Whittemore-Prescott 25-11 and 25-4 in their first match.

Jena Tulgestke led Rogers City with 17 kills and Alexa Quaine added 16 kills and 17 digs. Megan Quaine had seven aces and 43 digs; Cassidy Purgiel had 11 aces and seven kills; Cassie Brege had 43 assists; Sara Meredith had seven kills and eight aces and Courtney Streich had 12 kills, 12 assists, nine aces and 15 digs.

The Thunderbolts advanced to the title match with wins over Hale and Hillman.

After a first-round bye, Posen defeated Au Gres 25-20 and 25-12 before losing to the Hurons. The loss gave Posen a third-place finish in the league.

Korynn Hincka led Posen with nine kills and two blocks; Mercedes Kowalski had 15 assists and seven aces and Monica Bartz had five kills and five digs.

Alcona played one of the tournament’s first two matches and defeated Atlanta 25-11 and 25-10. Oscoda got the better of the Tigers in the next round however, winning 25-22 and 27-25.

Karina Cole led Alcona with 18 kills and Sydney Pierce added nine digs.

Rogers City will get a first-round bye as volleyball districts begin today, but Quaine said the tournament win provided a good tune-up for her team.

“We had a very balanced attack across the net and we could use all of our hitters,” Quaine said. “It’s a great win for us headed into districts.”

Hillman and Posen will play at 6 p.m. tonight in a Class D volleyball district in Rogers City with the winner advancing to play the Hurons on Wednesday.
